Daydreaming is not exactly something that the name implies as anyone who has ever daydreamed can attest to or anyone who has ever witnessed someone daydreaming. People who daydream are clearly distracted from anything they were doing or from anything that surrounds them. They are off in their own world and are not paying any attention to anything that surrounds them. Their eyes may be open but they are not focused on anything around them and they seem to be staring at nothing in particular. They are usually not paying attention to any of the sounds around them, and unless there is a loud noise, they will not hear anything either. Even if you call out a person’s name, they will usually not respond unless they are spoken to directly and loudly. Throughout history people who have daydreamed have been thought of as lazy and in some cultures, not intelligent.
Under most circumstances dreaming is harmless. People should pay attention to what they are doing if they are operating equipment. People who are supposed to being doing a job can often slip into a day dream state, and a boss at work can get angry. And historically this has been the problem with day dreaming, people are thought to be lazy and trying to get out of doing the work they were suppose to be doing. And although daydreaming can be way of escaping your present circumstances that you are unhappy with, many creative people have engaged in daydreaming. Abraham Lincoln is an example of someone who was thought to be a person who daydreamed a lot, but went down in history as perhaps the greatest of all United States presidents. Other examples of men who were known to daydream include Albert Einstein, Leonardo da Vinci, and Ludwig Beethoven. A well known daydreamer in recent American history was Walt Disney, whose creative influence is still felt today.
