What are the most popular themes in dreams, and what do they mean?

Having a baby…

Dream: I keep on dreaming about me having a baby also me holding the baby and being with child.

DreamsMaster: If you’re at an age and stage in life where having a baby is a possibility for you, then this dream may be foretelling your future. It’s actually quite common for a woman to dream of having or holding a baby before it’s confirmed that she’s pregnant. This is a time when a woman’s intuition is particularly keen.

When the literal interpretation of pregnancy is ruled out, dreams of having a baby carry powerful symbolism. A baby represents new life, new possibilities. This newness could manifest in the form of a creative new venture, or it could represent a new or renewed spiritual path. If your emotional state in the dream was happy, then the dream could signify positive new growth in your life to be excited about. If you felt anxious or upset, then perhaps part of the dream’s message is to give yourself a bit more nurturing and seek out support during this growthful time in your life.

Watching myself die…

Dream: I have been having a weird dream where I am being attacked by my family and I get lifted out of my body watching myself die!!!

DreamsMaster: In the world of dreams, death is symbolic of new life – out with the old, in with the new. Some part of you is dying off, making room for another part with clear vision to move forward.

Buried alive…

Dream: Last night I had a dream I was buried alive and it was spooky. Then, within my dream I awoke in my bed and was immediately pulled into my closet by a ghost. What does this mean???

DreamsMaster: My crystal ball tells me you watched the movie Paranormal Activity last night. Am I right? 😉

But seriously, most of our dreams have something to do with what was on our mind the night before. If you’d been watching a scary horror movie, it might partially explain the content of this dream.

That said, here are some other ideas to consider in regards to the dream themes and symbolism…

In both cases, you are a victim of someone doing something terrible to put fear into you. Questions to ask yourself, to see if there’s a parallel in your waking world:

Are you feeling terrorized by someone or something in your life today? There’s mention of a ghost – could there be someone or something from your past that’s haunting you?

Along similar lines, is there something going on in your life that’s contributing to feeling powerless? Could the image of being buried alive be a metaphor for feeling “buried” with work or smothered in a relationship?

Watch for similar themes of victimization and powerlessness in your dreams in the nights to come, and then look to the events and thoughts of the day and night before to identify the trend.

Cut the cord…

Dream: My dad passed away going on two years now. I dreamt that I was at a wedding and I walked upstairs and into my grandmother’s bedroom (my dad’s mother who is also deceased). I saw a figure lying in her bed with the covers pulled up over the head. I pulled the covers down and it was my dad. My first time dreaming about him since he passed away. He was asleep and never opened his eyes. In a joking way he asked me why did I make him cut the cord. Then he says “You know you’ re pregnant right? and it’s a boy.” Then at the end of the dream I was carrying a baby boy that appeared to be my dad.

DreamsMaster: My sense is this is a very special dream. It has elements of healing and new life, and also has the feel of a visitation, as if your dad’s spirit has actually found its way to you through your dream.

When I project myself into your dream, these themes call out to me:

– Wedding: A transition to a new chapter in life.

– Cut the cord: Also a transition, from parent-child dependence to independence.

– Pregnant: Creation of new life, bringing new life into the world. This could be literal, if you’re in a stage of life where having a child is a possibility, or it could be a metaphor for a new sense of self evolving inside you.

– Carrying a baby boy that may be your dad: Similar to the theme of pregnancy, this could have literal meaning as well as metaphorical meaning. In a literal sense, you may be carrying a child that has your dad’s spirit within. In a metaphorical sense, this could represent your new role in life… whereas once you were dependent on your father to carry you or take care of you, now the tables are turned — you are the adult and it’s up to you to be in the adult, care-giving role.

All of these images represent transition and new life. The fact that this is the first time you’ve had a dream about your dad since he passed away says to me that you are transitioning to a new level of acceptance in regards to the cycle of grief and loss. Death and birth are interrelated. Death is an ending, and birth a beginning. This dream appears to me as a gift signifying new beginnings for you.

Chased by an elephant…

Dream: I have been chased by an elephant.

DreamsMaster: In general, an elephant often symbolizes strength and wisdom. An elephant is also associated with strong memory. In some cultures, an elephant has spiritual significance and may represent good fortune. The real question is, what does an elephant mean to you personally? How would you describe an elephant to someone who had never seen one? Not just its appearance, but also its personality? As you describe the elephant, think of how you personally identify with these traits. The elephant could represent these aspects of yourself that you find unacceptable or threatening and are trying to avoid facing.

There’s also the expression “an elephant in the room”, which refers to something of obvious concern that people are refusing to acknowledge. If you are familiar with this expression, explore the possibility that the dream could represent a major concern in your life that you’ve been trying to ignore but is “chasing after you” for attention.

Another way to work with this dream is to imagine asking the elephant why it is pursuing you, what it wants from you. This dialog between your conscious and unconscious self may reveal some interesting new awareness.
